THE GENTLE ART

ABOUT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was first developed by Gracie brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastao Jr., and Hélio around 1925. The art was heavily influenced by Mitsuyo Maeda, a traveling Japanese judoka, who first taught Carlos Gracie. Hélio Gracie gradually developed the art as a softer, pragmatic adaptation that focused more on ground fighting.
