ABOUT TANG SOO DO

Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art which combines elements from Japanese Shotokan Karate, Northern Chinese martial arts, and the native Korean martial arts of Subak and Taekkyon. Tang Soo Do translates to “The Way of the Tang Hand”, with Tang signifying “empty”.

THE FOUNDER

Hwang Kee was one of the five original founders to open Korean Martial Arts Kwans, after the Japanese occupation. He formed the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1945. Moo Duk Kwan translates to “School of Martial Virtue”.

FORMALITIES & ETIQUETTE

Annyeonghasimnikka

(An-nyeong-ha-sim-ni-kka)

Used to open classes. It is a formal way to say “hello” in Korean.

Kamshamnida

(kam-sa-ham-ni-da)

Used to close classes. It is a formal way of saying “thank you” in Korean.

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT

TRADITIONAL UNIFORM

A white heavyweight Karate Do Bak is required for this class. Always make sure uniforms are clean and in good condition.

SPARRING GEAR

A full set of sparring gear is required for every class. Make sure all gear is sanitized after each use and in good condition.

SPARRING UNIFORM

A sparring uniform is required for sparring classes in replace of the Do Bak. This uniform may be used for tournaments.
